إن رائحة المطر التي نلحظها هي بالواقع رائحة جميلة و ليس مُزعجة. المُفاجى أن هذه الرائحة تنتج عن بكتيريا واسعة الانتشار في تُربة الكُرة الأرضية! تُسمى هذه البكتيريا بـ (Actinomycetes) و هي تعيش في التُربة الدافئة و الرطبة. و بِمُجرد أن تجف هذه التُربة تُطلق هذه البكتيريا حويصلات في التربة. و مع هطول الأمطار خاصة تلك التي تتميز بكُبر حجم قطرة الماء بها فإن تلك الحويصلات التي تنتج عن البكتيريا تنطلق نحو الهواء و من ثم تصل إلينا لنستنشق تلك الحويصلات و التي تتميز بتلك الرائحة التي يعتبرها العديد رائحة جميلة
